Supporting the next generation of construction professionals
A leading build, refurbishment and fit out contractor has shown support for the next generation through educational resources, work experience, and product donations.
Coventry-based McCarthys has delivered numerous classroom sessions and practical exercises at Birmingham Metropolitan College, as part of their commitment to developing the construction professionals of tomorrow.
Students in attendance gained an understanding of construction and refurbishment projects with insights from industry professionals. Tuition covered a range of topics from health and safety, site protocol, management, emergency procedures including fire safety through to practical works such as plumbing and electrical.
Steve McCarthy, managing director said: “The skills gap is a particular concern as we see people retiring, individuals changing careers, and the number of entrants dropping. Therefore, the construction industry has a responsibility to attract and nurture new talent. We hope that our approach will enrich students’ education and play a part in inspiring the next generation.”
McCarthys recently provided hands-on work experience to students covering sales, design, estimating and delivery. They gained not only office experience but site knowledge following site visits.
The fit out contractor has also supported Evergreen Primary School, Warwick. Through a donation of 80 hi-vis vests ensuring pupils will be kept safe at all times: on the playground, on school trips and in the car park during pick up/drop off times. The donation supports the schools’ objective of providing pupils with skills for life, including health and safety knowledge.
