McCarthys has been around for 45 years so we’ve witnessed lots of change in commercial spaces. From the rise of systems furniture in the 80s, to the move to open plan and demand for modular furniture, we’ve seen it all. More recently, the rise of hybrid and collaborative working has significantly impacted the design and configuration of workspaces.

Environmental sustainability is perhaps the single most important factor in the design, build and fit out of commercial workspaces right now – from new builds to retrofits. As companies look to meet their corporate social responsibilities (CSR), satisfy stakeholders and uphold their brand reputation, making sustainable choices has also become increasingly important. As such, it is reshaping the commercial refurbishment and fit out sector, from design and layout to the selection of materials, appliances and systems.

From offices, to educational institutions, or retail spaces, how can a build, fit out or refurbishment project be carried out more sustainably?

Defining criteria

The first step when looking to revamp a space in a more environmentally conscious way is to define clear objectives. For example, are you seeking to reduce emissions by a certain amount, enhance overall efficiency, or meet the requirements of specific environmental standards?

Once sustainability goals have been defined, it’s important to consider what it takes to reach them. What tangible action is needed to get there? This will encompass aspects including, but not limited to, energy efficiency, water usage, materials selection, and waste management.
